My first task upon joining Gateshead-based start-up sub-10 was to update their logo and develop a clear visual identity. Their previous logo felt out of step with their target market, and beyond that single graphic there were no brand guidelines in place.

The co-founders were very fond of the concept behind the logo, and so I refined the idea while still trying to keep the spirit of the original. I updated the brand palette to feel more harmonious, suggested a fresh brand font, and introduced the use of bold patterns in the brand colours.

Iterations before reaching the final logo design

The new identity went down fantastically, and I soon expanded into business cards, events banners, Teams backgrounds and more.

The brand continues to be refined as the company’s market positioning develops, and the latest iteration includes a striking dark background to contrast the bold colours. This can be seen most recently in an A5 events brochure (documented over on the Layout page).

The client is a group of writers committed to honest reporting on water, climate change and the environment. They were quite particular about colours used, and specifically wanted the font to suggest print journalism.
